We scroll past pictures in a second. But a photograph holds more than a glance can take. Here are three from the library's record. Scroll, and the frame moves closer, one detail at a time, across eight hundred years of the same land.

Eight hundred years, one Deccan.

A temple, a street, a crowd. The stone was cut before Delhi reached the south; the street was photographed under the Nizam; the crowd was asking for a state. Three photographs, one long argument about who this land belongs to. The answer, in the end, was Telangana.
